Monsoon activities across the country have once again reached their peak. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh and detailed weather bulletin and issued a severe warning for large parts of North India and Central India. According to meteorologists, due to the influence of a deep low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal and the active monsoon trough line, continuous torrential rains, thunderstorms and storm winds with a speed of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour are expected in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and hilly states till September 3.
The weather department has issued ‘orange’ and ‘yellow’ alerts for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several districts, especially in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. There is also a strong possibility of severe thunderstorms along with thunder in some sensitive areas. Due to this sudden change in the weather system, there is a possibility of life being badly affected due to waterlogging in low-lying areas, traffic jams in urban areas and swelling of seasonal rivers in rural areas.
Monsoon has become fully active in Uttar Pradesh. Due to the trough passing through the southern and central parts of the state, widespread rainfall has intensified from Purvanchal to Paschimanchal and Bundelkhand. The Meteorological Department has advised to remain vigilant for the next 72 to 96 hours in many districts of the capital Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Ayodhya, Jhansi, Banda, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Chitrakoot, Mirzapur, Sonbhadra, Bareilly, Moradabad, Meerut and Agra divisions.
Intermittent heavy to very heavy rainfall can be recorded in the districts of Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Terai, due to which there is an increase in the water level of major rivers like Ghaghra, Saryu, Rapti and Ganga. There is a high risk of lightning in the areas of Western UP and Bundelkhand. Local district administrations have been instructed to keep disaster management teams ready and pumping sets active to remove water from waterlogged urban areas. Farmers have been advised to completely avoid working in open fields or taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
Madhya Pradesh currently remains the main center of the weather system. Due to the effect of cyclonic circulation over the state, clouds have camped in almost all the divisions. Continuous heavy rains are going on in Jabalpur, Rewa, Shahdol, Sagar, Gwalior, Chambal, Bhopal, Narmadapuram and Indore divisions. According to the Meteorological Center Bhopal, due to heavy rainfall in the areas adjoining Malwa-Nimar and Bundelkhand, rivers and streams will remain in spate for the next few days.
Due to continuous torrential rains in the catchment areas of major rivers like Narmada, Betwa, Chambal, Tapti and Shipra, the water level of many big dams has reached close to its full capacity. In view of the possibility of release of excess water from Bargi, Tawa, Bansagar and Indira Sagar dams, an alert has been declared in the downstream villages. In many rural areas, major roads have been cut off due to flooding of bridges and culverts. The administration has appealed to the people not to try to cross swollen rivers and streams.
Apart from the plain states, the weather conditions are very bad in the hilly areas also. Due to heavy rains on the mountain slopes of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, the danger of landslides and boulder falls is at its peak. Travelers traveling on Chardham Yatra routes and hilly national highways have been instructed to proceed only after getting accurate weather information. Due to torrential rains in Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli, Shimla and Mandi districts, incidents of debris falling on sensitive roads have increased.
At the same time, rain activities along with strong thunder will increase in Jaipur, Kota, Sawai Madhopur, Bharatpur and Dausa of Eastern Rajasthan. There is a possibility of moderate to heavy rain along with lightning in the districts of Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Rohtas and Seemanchal of Bihar. An alert of heavy rain has also been issued over South Peninsular India and western coastal states like Maharashtra (Konkan-Goa), Gujarat and Coastal Karnataka due to the activation of Monsoon till September 3.
The Meteorological Department and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have issued necessary guidelines for common citizens to stay safe from rain and lightning. Strict instructions have been given to stay away from open spaces, mobile towers, electric poles and tall trees during sudden lightning and loud thunder.

According to scientists of the Meteorological Center, this monsoon activity is likely to continue with the same intensity till September 3. After this, partial improvement in the weather may be seen due to the influence of western winds. Till then, the administration in all sensitive states has been ordered to remain fully alert.
