Big action by EC after implementation of Election Code of Conduct, instructions given to remove Home Secretaries of 6 states

Before the Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission has taken strict action and ordered the removal of Home Secretaries of 6 states. The Election Commission on Monday removed Gujarat Home Secretary Pankaj Joshi, Uttar Pradesh Home Secretary Sanjay Prasad and Jharkhand Home Secretary Arva Rajkamal. Apart from these, Home Secretaries of Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been removed. All of them were holding dual charge in the Chief Minister's office.

Apart from these, the Commission has also issued an order to remove the West Bengal Police Chief. Apart from Brihanmumbai Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, additional commissioners and deputy commissioners have also been removed. Expressing displeasure with the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, the Commission directed BMC and Additional/Deputy Commissioners to submit the report by 6 pm today and transfer the officers.

Secretaries of General Administration Department in Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh have also been removed. This decision was taken after a meeting held between Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu under the chairmanship of Rajiv Kumar on Monday afternoon. The Election Commission has directed all state governments to transfer those officers engaged in election-related work who have completed three years or are in their home districts.

This action has been taken by the Commission at a time when the dates of Lok Sabha elections were announced on Saturday. The officers who have been removed had dual charges in the Chief Minister's Office in the respective states, which could have compromised the essential impartiality during the election process, especially the deployment of law and order security forces. The Election Commission wants to ensure that there is neither rigging nor any kind of violence during the elections in these states.
