BHU's Prof. Ashish Kumar Upadhyay invited for Memorial Award Lecture

Varanasi, June 07 (HS). Dr. Ashish Kumar Upadhyay, Professor of Mathematics Department of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been invited by the Indian Mathematical Society for the Memorial Award Lecture.

The society will present a citation and honorarium to Dr Upadhyaya at its 35th V. Ramaswamy Iyer Memorial Award Lecture. According to the university's public relations office, V. Ramaswamy Iyer, in whose name the Memorial Award Lecture is given, was born in 1871.

He worked as a civil servant in the Madras state. Due to his interest in mathematics, Iyer was a great supporter and promoter of this subject. When he realized that there was a need to establish a central research institute, he formed the Indian Mathematical Club in 1907 with 20 members. This club later became the Indian Mathematical Society. In 1910, when Srinivasa Ramanujan met V. Ramaswami and showed him his notebooks, Iyer was the person who understood Srinivasa Ramanujan's talent and work and promoted it. This award lecture will be given during the 90th annual conference of the Indian Mathematical Society. This program is being organized in December this year at MIT World Peace University in Pune, Maharashtra.
