Khunti, 21 August (HS). The Bharat Bandh called by various organizations on Wednesday against the Supreme Court's decision on creamy layer in reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) had a complete impact in Khunti district. All shops and business establishments remained closed since morning. The movement of passenger and goods vehicles was completely halted.

In the morning itself, leaders and workers of JMM and other tribal organizations came out on the streets and closed shops and vehicles. Bandh supporters blocked the road near Netaji Chowk, Bhagat Singh Chowk and Tangratonli of the district headquarters. Two wheelers were also stopped. Due to this, common people had to face a lot of trouble. Schools and colleges associated with missionary institutions also remained closed. Some schools opened in the morning, but at nine-ten o'clock all schools were closed. Bandh supporters also forcibly closed government schools.

Many leaders including JMM district president Zubair Ahmed, Magan Manjit Tidu, Snehlata Kandulna took to the streets in support of the bandh. Apart from the district headquarters, the bandh was also effective in Torpa, Karra, Rania, Murhu and Adki block headquarters as well as in rural areas. Due to Bharat Bandh, the movement of passenger vehicles came to a halt and there was silence on the roads throughout the day.

It is noteworthy that in one of its recent decisions, the Supreme Court had allowed the state governments to create different categories among the people of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe. The court had said that the needy should get the maximum benefit of reservation. The National Confederation of Dalit and Tribal Organizations had called for a Bharat Bandh against this decision. This decision of the court was said to be against the constitutional rights of Dalits and tribals. There is a demand from the court to withdraw this decision.
