BCCI will face a big loss in its earnings, Health Ministry is preparing to take a big step

Stop showing tobacco ads during cricket matches: Many types of advertisements come during the match. Due to which BCCI earns a lot of money. But currently BCCI shows advertisements of tobacco and gutkha during matches. In such a situation, now the Health Ministry is preparing to ban such advertisements during the match. The ministry will soon talk to BCCI about this.

41.3% of ads were shown in the last 17 matches

A study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and global health organisation Vital Strategies said that 41.3% of all surrogate advertisements of smokeless tobacco (SLT) brands were displayed during the last 17 matches of the Cricket World Cup in 2023. The study was published in the British Medical Journal in May.

The Health Ministry is also in a mood to ban advertisements promoting 'cardamom' mouth fresheners manufactured by smokeless tobacco manufacturers, especially those manufactured by Bollywood celebrities and former cricketers.

This advertisement is also shown in tournaments like IPL

Apart from international matches, many cricket grounds hosting popular tournaments such as the IPL also display advertisements for smokeless tobacco products. These include gutkha, pan-masala and chewing tobacco.

Request to stop showing tobacco related advertisements

Giving information on this matter, an official said that cricket is popular among the youth. DGHS of the Health Ministry can contact BCCI and request them to stop showing tobacco related advertisements in any form.
