The Indian team suffered a crushing 3-1 defeat in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This victory was special for Australia, as they captured this prestigious series after 10 years. But this defeat for India has left many questions, one of which is uncertainty over the future of Rohit Sharma. Key batsmen like captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli flopped miserably in this series. Whereas, R. Ashwin surprised everyone by announcing his retirement in the middle of the series.
Discussion on Rohit Sharma’s retirement intensifies
In the last match of the series, Rohit Sharma kept himself out of the team, after which the speculations about his retirement intensified. However, he made it clear during the Sydney Test that he is not leaving Test cricket yet and his game is not over. Despite this, BCCI is preparing to take a major decision regarding his Test future.
According to Hindustan Times report, BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and Interim Secretary Devjit Saikia will soon review the performance of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in a meeting. Rohit Sharma’s Test career will also be discussed in this meeting.
BCCI’s big decision possible on Rohit Sharma
Rohit Sharma may have said that he is not going anywhere, but the discussion is going on in BCCI on whether the 37-year-old batsman should remain in the team or not.
A BCCI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said:
“Rohit was waiting to know whether India would qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final. When this did not happen, he kept himself out of the last match. Now it completely depends on the selection committee and Ajit Agarkar whether Rohit should be kept in the team or not.”
Rohit’s bet on WTC final and his strategy
Reports also claim that Rohit Sharma had kept himself out of the final Test in order to qualify for the WTC 2025 final. However, India lost the Sydney Test, and all avenues for the team to reach the final were closed.
BCCI officials believe that Team India needs to make a fresh strategy and bring changes in the Test team.
Team India’s next test match and challenge
The Indian team’s next Test series is against England, which will start in late June. This series will be important for Team India because:
- Form of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli: It will be very important for these two experienced batsmen to get back into form.
- India’s struggles in red ball cricket: India have been performing inconsistently in Test cricket for a long time, and finding a solution to this will be a priority for the team management,
