Why and where are banks closed on 18th December?
Banks will remain closed in Meghalaya on December 18 due to the death anniversary of U Soso Tham. U Soso Tham, born in 1873 in Sohra or Cherrapunji, Meghalaya, was a poet. He was the first poet who introduced unique and original vocabulary to secular literature. He was also the first to use Khasi idioms, taken mainly from English poetry. U Soso Tham is mainly remembered for his beautiful poems. 18 December is a public holiday in Meghalaya. Due to this, there will be no work in all the government offices here on this day. Apart from Meghalaya, banks will remain open in other states on this day.

There will be a bank holiday in Goa on 19th December. According to the RBI list, there will be a holiday for banks in the capital Panaji. The reason for this is Goa Liberation Day. Goa, Daman and Diu Liberation Day is celebrated in Goa every year on 19 December. According to Wikipedia, Goa Liberation Day commemorates the capture of Portuguese-ruled Goa by the Indian Armed Forces in 1961, after which India became free from any European rule. Usually RBI releases the list of bank holidays across the country.

Bank branches remain closed for payment services or cash deposits or large transactions. Generally, bank holidays in the country vary according to states and cities.
