Bank Holidays: On the occasion of Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti, a public holiday has been declared at many places today, due to which schools, colleges, government offices and banks will remain closed. According to RBI, banks will remain closed in Bengaluru, Guwahati and Shimla today.

Remaining holidays in the month of October
October 17, 2024 (Thursday): Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti/Kati Bihu – Celebrated in states like Karnataka, Assam and Himachal Pradesh.
October 26, 2024 (Saturday): Accession day in Jammu and Kashmir.
October 31, 2024 (Thursday): Diwali (Deepawali) – A major festival celebrated across the country, especially in states like Gujarat and West Bengal, which also marks the birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Apart from these, banks will also remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays (October 12 and 26) as well as every Sunday of the month.
How does RBI determine holidays?
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) divides holidays into three categories. Holidays under Negotiable Instruments Act; Holidays under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays. According to the RBI holiday calendar, banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. Additionally, bank holidays for festivals vary from state to state and city to city.
