Tehran: The heatwave prevailing across Iran has forced all government offices, commercial institutions, banks to close their offices on Sunday and reduce working hours on Saturday.

Weather reports said temperatures in Iran's capital Tehran ranged between 37 degrees Celsius and 42 degrees. Banks and public institutions across the country will be closed on Sunday to protect people's health and conserve energy, the state news agency said. Only emergency services and medical agencies are excluded. Authorities reduced working hours in several provinces on Saturday. They said temperatures in Tehran were recorded above 40 degrees on Friday. Iranian media warned people to stay indoors until 4 pm local time.

Power consumption hit a record high of 78,106 megawatts on Tuesday, officials said. Iran's Supreme National Security Council said temperatures in Iran are rising twice as fast as the global average, one degree above the long-term average. Iran has warmed by two degrees in the past 50 years. Last year, Iran announced two nationwide holidays because of rising temperatures.
