Dhaka: Preparations are underway to issue a red notice from Interpol against former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Chief Prosecutor of the country’s International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) has written a letter to the IG asking him to take steps to issue this notice against Hasina through Interpol. It is noteworthy that the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina had fallen on August 5 due to the violent student movement. Hasina had to leave the country and since then she is in India.

It has been reported in the local media quoting ICT sources that Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam has sent a letter to IG Muhammad Moinul Islam in this regard. Earlier on Sunday, Asif Nazrul, adviser on legal affairs to the interim government, had said that Bangladesh would seek Interpol’s help in bringing back Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives from India to face alleged crimes against humanity. According to the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, 753 people were killed and thousands were injured during the movement.

By October, more than 60 complaints of crimes against humanity and genocide were filed against Hasina and her party leaders. According to officials, the red notice is not an international arrest warrant. It is a global application for law enforcement agencies to locate and temporarily arrest a person pending extradition, surrender or similar legal action. Interpol member states may, in accordance with their national laws, impose red notices.
