Sheikh Hasina extradition: Bangladesh has written a letter to India demanding the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor Tauheed Hussain said, “We have appealed to the Indian government that the Bangladesh government wants Sheikh Hussain to return to Bangladesh for the judicial process.
On Monday, Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam said that ‘Our ministry has written a letter to the Foreign Ministry demanding to bring back ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. The Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh is demanding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India.
Bangladesh’s demand
An extradition treaty was signed in 2013 between the governments of India and Bangladesh. Under which India signed an agreement to hand over accused or fugitive accused and prisoners in ‘cases of extraditable offences’. The Bangladesh government said, ‘Under this treaty we are demanding the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, a clause in the extradition treaty states that if an extradition appeal is made for a person whose charges are of a political nature, the appeal may be rejected.’
Extradition may be sought for this crime
The extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh allows extradition of persons involved in crimes, except in political cases. These crimes include terrorism, bombings, murders and disappearances. However, former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina has been accused of mass murder, looting and counterfeiting. Apart from this, a commission of Bangladesh has also accused him of making people disappear. In this report named ‘Unfolding the Truth’, Sheikh Hasina was accused of making some important people of Bangladesh disappear.
