New Delhi: The reason for the severe flood in the southern part of Bangladesh is the water released by India from the Gomti river flowing from Tripura to Bangladesh. India rejected such allegations of Bangladesh. In this regard, the Ministry of External Affairs of India said that the flood situation in the eastern south region of Bangladesh is not caused by the water released from the Dumbur Dam built on the Gomti River in Tripura. This allegation is completely wrong.
The MEA list further states that this year heavy to very heavy rains have occurred in entire eastern India, north eastern India and Bangladesh as well. It has been raining heavily for the last few days. Therefore, there is flooding in the catchment area of all the rivers in the region.
Dumbur Dam is located on the Gomti River, 120 km from the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura, India. It is only about 30 meters high. It also generates hydroelectricity and Bangladesh receives 40 MW from it. It also draws power.
The Gomti river flows for 120 km in India. Water level monitoring centres have been set up in Amarpur, Sonpura and Sonamura-2 to check its water level. In case of heavy rains, the gates on top of the dam will open automatically due to the pressure of water. Such arrangements have also been made.
