‘Ban WhatsApp which does not follow the rules’, Supreme Court rejects the petition

Supreme Court: The Supreme Court has rejected the petition demanding closure of the popular messaging app WhatsApp. The petitioner said that WhatsApp does not follow the IT guidelines of the central government. In 2021, the Kerala High Court also rejected this demand of these petitioners.
Omanakuttan KG, a resident of Kerala, said that in 2021, the Kerala High Court had rejected his petition calling it premature and saying that IT guidelines have not been issued by the government.

Now WhatsApp itself has challenged the IT Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code, 2021 by filing a petition in the Delhi High Court. WhatsApp has said that it acts in accordance with its privacy policy.

WhatsApp is not following India’s rules

The petitioner had argued that WhatsApp does not want to comply with India’s rules regarding user privacy and spread of misinformation, so it should not be allowed to operate here.
