New Delhi, 21 August (HS). Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday that we should ensure that the development of e-commerce is citizen-centric. He said that there is a need to ensure that there is no disruption for the 100 million small retailers in the country.
Commerce Minister Goyal said this while launching a report of the First India Foundation on 'Net Impact of E-Commerce on Employment and Consumer Welfare in India' in the capital New Delhi. Participating as the chief guest in the report release ceremony, he said that the growth of e-commerce should democratize the distribution of benefits among a large section of the society. He urged the business community and experts to carefully study and evaluate the impact of e-commerce in a detailed and scientific manner in the context of the needs of the country.
Goyal, while addressing the event, said that a balanced approach is needed for the development of e-commerce in India. He underlined the importance of protecting India's developing economy and supporting those who still need positive action. The Commerce Minister said that a balanced approach is needed, which ensures fair and equitable growth for both small retailers and e-commerce platforms. The Commerce Minister expressed his concern about the impact of e-commerce on local businesses and employment, especially in sectors such as pharmacies and mobile phone repair shops.
