The BJP government of Uttar Pradesh has constituted the Scheduled Caste and Tribe Commission before the by-elections. Baijnath Rawat, who was an MLA from Barabanki in 2017, has been made the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Scheduled Caste and Tribe Commission. Also, former MLA Bechan Ram from Gorakhpur and Jeet Singh Kharwar from Sonbhadra have been given the responsibility of vice-chairman. The names of 9 members along with one chairman and two vice-chairmen have been announced in this commission.
Baijnath Rawat, who has been made the chairman of the commission, has a long association with politics. He has held responsibilities ranging from MLA to MP. Baijnath Rawat is a resident of a village near Haidergarh in Barabanki. Rawat was given a ticket by the BJP from Haidergarh seat in the 2017 assembly elections, after which Rawat won the election by a huge margin and defeated two-time SP MLA Ram Magan by about 33 thousand votes.
Baijnath Rawat has been an MLA thrice and was also elected MP from Barabanki once in 1998. Along with this, he was also given the responsibility of Minister of State in the UP government. However, an important turn came in the political journey of Baijnath Rawat when his ticket was cut in the UP assembly elections in the year 2022, due to which Rawat was very angry with the party. Expressing his displeasure with the high command, he even said that his ticket was cut because he belongs to the Dalit community. BJP had given ticket to Dinesh Rawat from Haidergarh in place of Baijnath Rawat.
Baijnath Rawat comes from a Dalit family. Despite spending so much time in politics, he lives a simple life. He does farming himself and feeds the animals himself. However, now that he has been made the chairman of the commission, a big responsibility has fallen on Baijnath Rawat's shoulders.
