Bad weather in Nepal, 28 people died

Bad weather has disrupted life in neighbouring Nepal. At least 28 people have died in weather-related incidents and the country has been hit by landslides, floods and lightning strikes since the arrival of the southwest monsoon till Thursday. The monsoon arrived in eastern parts of Nepal on June 10 and since then the country has been hit by several natural disasters. On Wednesday, 44 incidents of landslides, floods and lightning were reported from various districts.

Nepal is spread over three main geographical regions – the Himalayan region, the central mountainous region and the Terai. Many small and large rivers flow in the Himalayan mountain range, where weather-related events are increasing due to climate change. According to Home Ministry sources, 15 people have died due to landslides and floods in five districts of eastern and western Nepal. According to National Disaster Risk Response and Management Authority spokesperson Dijan Bhattarai, landslides have killed five each in Lamjung and Taplejung districts, two in Kaski and one each in Sankhuwasabha and Okhaldhunga districts. He said one person died and another is missing due to floods in Morang district.

30 houses have collapsed due to the landslide

Due to the landslide, 30 houses have been completely destroyed in these areas. According to officials, similarly, lightning killed 13 people in 11 districts, including two each in Jhapa and Kailali districts. Meanwhile, officials said that two people injured in the landslide in Okhaldhunga district were airlifted to Kathmandu on Wednesday and are being treated at a private hospital. The government has deployed the army, armed police force, police personnel and local people for rescue and relief operations.
