Bad news for Indian students, Trudeau changed the rules

Post-graduation work permits will no longer be valid for entry into Canada. The Government of Canada has suspended the entry of foreign nationals through the PGWP. Applications for foreign national post-graduation work permits will close after June 21, 2024. The Government of Canada has instructed border services officers not to consider post-graduation work permit applications for entry into Canada.

According to a statement from the Canadian government, foreign nationals will no longer be able to apply for post-graduation work permits at the border. This decision will come into effect immediately.

According to media reports applicants can apply for PGWP from Canada if their study permit has not expired. Applicants who apply for their work permit while their study permit is still valid and pending a decision on their work permit application may be allowed to work without a permit. This rule does not apply to foreign nationals who have applied to extend their study permit and are studying, and they must wait until they receive their new study permit to be eligible. Applicants whose study permit becomes invalid or expires before applying for a work permit will not be eligible to apply from Canada.

What is a Canada Work Permit?

Applicants who do not have the ability to apply for a work permit in Canada can submit their application electronically for processing outside of Canada. Applicants can submit the application electronically if they live in Canada. They must maintain their status as visitors until they receive an actual work permit. But they are not eligible to work while waiting for a decision on their PGWP application.

Permission to work for 3 years after graduation

A post-graduation work permit in Canada allows anyone to stay and work in Canada after completing their studies. A post-graduation work permit allows you to stay in Canada and work full-time for up to 3 years after graduating from a Canadian post-secondary institution. To be eligible to apply for a post-graduation work permit in Canada, you must have graduated from a study program of at least 8 months, completed an undergraduate or postgraduate program at a Canadian university. You must apply for a work permit within 180 days of the issuance of your final marks for the permit.
