The relationship between fashion and cinema has always been very close and shining, but sometimes some unique moments happen behind the ramp which become memorable stories for a lifetime. India’s first internationally recognized veteran fashion designer Ritu Beri has shared a very interesting and heart-touching memoir related to Bollywood’s ‘Khiladi’ actor Akshay Kumar in her special interview show ‘Baatein Dil Se’. Ritu Beri told that in the initial phase of her career, when during one of her big fashion shows, the main male model could not reach at the last moment, then Akshay Kumar saved the honor of the show by walking straight on the ramp without any preparation, without any rehearsal and without any tantrum. Praising Akshay’s simplicity, discipline and generosity, Ritu said that there may be a crowd of stars in Bollywood, but in her heart Akshay was, is and will always be ‘number 1’.
Recalling that period, Ritu Beri said that in the 90s, fashion shows organized in Delhi and Mumbai were not as high-tech and highly planned as they are today. During a prestigious fashion show, which was attended by many VIP guests from India and abroad, the model presenting the main garment of Ritu’s collection could not reach the venue on time due to some reason. Backstage, the entire team was in shock as only a few minutes were left for the show to start and the entire sequence would have remained incomplete without a showstopper. Meanwhile, Akshay Kumar, who was making his mark in the industry at that time and was counted among Ritu’s close friends, was present backstage.
Ritu Beri told that as soon as Akshay saw the tension backstage, he without wasting a moment said, “Don’t worry, I will do the walk.” In the fashion world, walking on the ramp of a big show without trial, fitting and rehearsal is considered a big risk, because ramp walk has its own special pacing and style. But Akshay wore the outfit within minutes and stepped on the stage. Ritu said, “The confidence, ease and charisma with which Akshay walked the ramp, the entire hall erupted in thunderous applause. No one even realized that he had not practiced even for a second for this walk. He not only saved my show from sinking, but also made it the biggest highlight of the evening.”
In ‘Baatein Dil Se’ Ritu Beri shed light on those aspects of Akshay Kumar’s personality which are often hidden behind the glare of the camera. Ritu said that Akshay’s biggest quality is his discipline and connection with the land. He was outspoken and helpful even when he was not at the peak of success, and even when he became the country’s biggest superstar, there was no change in his behavior. Ritu said that people in Bollywood often forget old relationships after attaining stardom, but Akshay still meets them with the same warmth. Whenever a loved one needs help, Akshay is seen standing at the forefront without any formality.
Ritu Beri is one of the few Indian designers who represented India at Paris Fashion Week and led the ready-to-wear collection of French fashion house ‘Jean-Louis Scherrer’. She has also been honored with France’s highest civilian honor ‘Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters’. In recent years, Ritu Beri has launched several major campaigns to promote Khadi and traditional Indian handlooms globally. In this journey, she has worked with many film stars, but she always considers her bonding with Akshay Kumar as the most special and sincere.
The video clip of this memoir of Ritu Beri is becoming increasingly viral as soon as it comes on social media. Fans are praising this unheard aspect of Akshay Kumar and his generosity. Social media users say that this incident proves that Akshay is not only a player on screen, but in real life too he is a true human being who stands as a troubleshooter in every difficult moment. At the end of her conversation, Ritu Beri smiled and said that today whenever she watches any of Akshay’s films or any of his new projects, she remembers the same young man who without thinking had stepped on the ramp to honor a friend.
