Hyderabad: Former Indian cricket team captain and Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin did not appear before the ED on Thursday. He was summoned by the ED in a money laundering case related to alleged financial irregularities in the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). He sought extension from the ED and has been called again on October 8.

According to sources, the 61-year-old former MP has been asked to appear at the ED office on October 3 and record his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. However, he asked for more time. A new summons has been issued to Azharuddin for October 8. The investigation pertains to alleged financial irregularities at HCA. In this regard, ED had conducted raids in November last year. The raids were conducted at SS Consultants Pvt Ltd and its MD Satyanarayan along with former HCA vice-president and cricketer Shivlal Yadav, Congress MLA and former HCA president Gadam Vinod and former HCA secretary Arshad Ayub. Sources said Azharuddin's role as HCA president is being investigated. There has been no response from their side yet.

The money laundering case pertains to three FIRs and charge sheets filed by the Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau in connection with alleged embezzlement of Rs 20 crore in HCA. The ED had said in its statement that the charge sheet has alleged serious irregularities in the installation of diesel generators, fire fighting system and umbrellas at the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad. Let us tell you that Azharuddin started his political career in 2009 by winning the Moradabad Lok Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh. He is the President of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee. Last year he had to face defeat in the assembly elections.
