The report quoted sources as saying that the limit of coverage to the beneficiaries under the scheme is to be increased from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per year. According to the report, the NDA government is planning to double the number of beneficiaries under its flagship Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in the next three years. If the government makes such an announcement, more than two-thirds of the country's population will be able to get health cover. Sources in the report said that the government is considering this as the high cost of treatment is one of the major reasons pushing families into a debt trap.

The central government has fixed July 23 as the date for presenting the general budget. These proposals or parts of them are expected to be announced in this budget. According to the estimate prepared by the National Health Authority, if these proposals are approved, then there will be an additional burden of Rs 12,076 crore on the government treasury every year. Another source said that by adding people above 70 years of age, about 4-5 crore other beneficiaries will be included under this scheme.
