Mohali: Taking an important decision, the education department of Punjab has abolished the benefit of special promotion during the extension of service period of state and national award winning teachers. According to the new order, teachers who used to get annual promotion on the basis of meritorious service will no longer get promotion.
It has been clarified in the instructions issued by the Education Department that on completion of 58 years of age, provincial award winning teachers will get 1 year of service and national award winning teachers will get 2 years of service. During this period, they will not be given any benefit of promotion and further upgradation. Teachers who get an increase in service will have to work on the basis of the last pay scale. The decision states that this appointment will be considered as reappointment. While applying for this service extension call, teachers will have to give a self-declaration form, in which they will agree to accept this decision.
Demand for extension of service period in 2018
This matter has been in discussion since 2018 when the association of state/national award winning teachers demanded an increase in service call. The government, with the consent of the Finance Department, decided to implement the instructions of 1989, under which it was decided to increase the service period of all state and national award winning teachers by 1 or 2 years. Now with the new decision, if due to any instruction the national award winning employees were getting the benefit of annual promotion, then it has been canceled with immediate effect.
The order regarding salary hike to state and national/awarded teachers in the education department was implemented on 9 October 1989. According to these orders, state award winning teachers were reappointed for 01 year on completion of 58 years of age. Similarly, national award winning teachers have been given an extension of 2 years on the basis of being physically and mentally healthy. These instructions remained in force till the new instructions were issued on 10 July 2018. After this, the department issued a letter on 25 April 2020 and stopped the salary hike to be given to these teachers from 31 March 2022.
