Austria beats Netherlands, Poland draws 1-1 with France

Berlin, June 26 (HS). Austria beat the Netherlands 3-2 in Group D on Tuesday at the ongoing Euro 2024, while Robert Lewandowski helped Poland hold France to a 1-1 draw in the final round of group play.

The Netherlands got off to a poor start at the Berlin Olympia Stadium when Donyell Malen headed Alexander Prass's square pass into his own goal, giving Austria a 1-0 lead in just the sixth minute of the match. The Dutch responded well and tried to equalise, but Tijjani Reinders missed two promising chances as the match progressed.

Austria maintained its 1-0 lead in the first half.

Cody Gakpo equalised for the Netherlands in the second minute of the second half. It was only momentary joy for Ronald Koeman's side as Austria hit back and Romano Schmid scored from Florian Grillitsch's precise cross in the 60th minute to give Austria a 2-1 lead again.

In the 75th minute of the match, Memphis Depay scored with a header from Wout Weghort to make the score 2–2.

Austria took a 3–2 lead in the match thanks to a goal by Markel Sabitzer in the 80th minute and ultimately this score proved to be decisive.

In the second match of Group D, France had to play a 1-1 draw against Poland. Kylian Mbappe scored the opening goal for France, but experienced striker Robert Lewandowski scored a goal to give Poland a 1-1 draw and this score proved to be decisive.

As a result, Austria finished on top with six points, followed by France (5 points), the Netherlands (4 points) and Poland (1 point).
