Melbourne, 20 December (HS). The Australian men’s domestic one-day cup has been renamed the Dean Jones Trophy in honor of the player who “revolutionized” the limited overs game.

A campaign was launched on Cricket Australia’s digital platforms earlier this year to name a list of players for the tournament, including Jones, Michael Bevan and Andrew Symonds, who were assessed by the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame. It was done by the Fame Committee.

The main criteria for the award included his record in the men’s one-day competition, being a top performer at the international level and being a player synonymous with the 50-over format.

“When the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame selection committee evaluates players for this honour, a player’s performance, record, reputation, contribution and impact are considered,” Hall of Fame chairman Peter King was quoted as saying by Cricket Australia (CA). It came out clearly, due to which this decision was taken unanimously. “Dean Jones revolutionized the one-day game and left his mark on the minds of all Australians, it deserves recognition for a man whose contribution was so immense.”

Jones’ daughter, Phoebe, said, “On behalf of the Jones family, we are very grateful for this recognition of our father, who we miss very much. It’s even more special to know that his fans voted and it will be unveiled today in ‘his office’ at the MCG.”

He said, “Dad would be very proud to receive this honor. He loved representing Victoria in this competition and winning the 50-over World Cup for Australia in 1987 was the greatest cricket day of his life.”

As well as naming the trophy, the Michael Bevan Medal will now be awarded to the best player of the final. The Dean Jones Trophy and Michael Bevan Medal will be awarded for the first time in this season’s final on 1 March.
