Dhaka, 06 December (HS). In Bangladesh, Hindus are being selectively targeted after the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, spokesperson of Sanatan Jagran Manch and saint of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). There is sharp criticism of oppression of minority Hindus all over the world. Amidst all this, a worrying incident has come to light in Sunamganj. Here, tension has increased after attacks on Hindu homes and temples following a Facebook post. According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, a photo of 21-year-old Hindu youth Akash Das released on a Facebook post enraged people from other communities. The storm of hatred created chaos in the remote village Mangalargaon of Dowarabazar Upazila of Sunamganj on Tuesday night. Hindu houses, shops and temples were extensively vandalized. Dovarabazar police station in-charge Jahidul Haq confirmed this.
He said that in view of the anger of the crowd, Akash was taken into custody. The situation was brought under control after the intervention of army personnel with the support of local leaders and religious representatives. The miscreants did not even spare the Loknath temple of Mangalargaon. According to Khokan Roy, General Secretary of Loknath Temple Management Committee, who reached Sunamganj from Mangalargaon, the mob also attacked the Loknath Temple. During this period, valuables worth more than Rs 15 lakh were stolen. He claimed that around 100 houses were damaged. Gold jewelery shops and Hindu-owned shops were looted. However, the police have denied the incidents of looting.
Sub-Inspector Arafat Ibne Shafiullah said that a case was registered against the detained youth Akash under the Cyber Security Act and he was presented in the court. He was sent to jail after not getting bail. Police and military forces have been deployed in the village. Deputy Commissioner MD Ilyas Miyan hinted at a possible conspiracy behind the attack. Officials suspect that the mob was instigated to target Hindu properties. The scale of the damage is being publicized in an exaggerated manner. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council on Thursday said there was damage worth at least Rs 15 lakh.
