Mushtaq Ahmed Bukhari dies of heart attack: BJP candidate from Surankot in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Mushtaq Bukhari has passed away. 75-year-old Bukhari was ill for some time. He breathed his last on Wednesday morning at his residence in Pamrot area of Surankote in Poonch district. Senior PDP leader and party candidate from Mendhar Assembly Advocate Nadeem Rafiq Hussain Khan and leaders of other parties have expressed grief over the demise of Bukhari.
Bukhari has been MLA twice
The BJP fielded Bukhari from Surankote, a seat reserved for Scheduled Tribes in the Jammu region. Bukhari, a two-time MLA, was once considered one of the close associates of National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah. Bukhari, who was associated with the National Conference for four decades, parted ways in February 2022. Bukhari left the National Conference due to differences with Farooq Abdullah over granting ST status to the hill community.
Comparisons started with Gandhiji
During the campaign for Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh had compared Bukhari with Mahatma Gandhi and former South African President Nelson Mandela. Chugh described Bukhari as a leader of change and praised his work for the Pahari community, saying that it was because of Bukhari that the Pahari community in Jammu and Kashmir got 'de facto freedom'.
