New Delhi, August 12 (HS). On the occasion of the closing of Paris Olympics 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi late on Sunday night praised the efforts of the Indian contingent participating in several sports representing the tricolor and said that the country is proud of them. With the closing ceremony, the Paris Olympics concluded on Sunday.
PM Modi wrote on X, “On the occasion of the closing of the Paris Olympics, I appreciate the efforts of the entire Indian contingent through the Games. All the athletes have given their best and every Indian is proud of them. Best wishes to our sporting heroes for their upcoming endeavours.”
In the Paris Olympics, the Indian team ranked 71st with 6 medals, including one silver medal and five bronze medals. The Indian team comprised 117 athletes.
Manu Bhaker won the first medal (bronze) for India at these Games and became the first Indian woman to win a medal in Olympic shooting. She then won another bronze in the mixed team 10m air pistol event with Sarabjot Singh and created history by becoming the first Indian to win two medals in the same Olympic edition. Her medal with Sarabjot was also the country's first team medal in shooting.
Swapnil Kusale won his third medal in shooting, India's biggest haul in the sport at a single Olympics.
The Indian men's hockey team replicated their Tokyo 2020 success by securing a bronze medal in Paris. Neeraj Chopra further added to his Olympic legacy by winning a silver medal in javelin throw and became India's most successful individual Olympian.
Aman Sehrawat added his name to the medal tally by winning a bronze medal in wrestling to become India's youngest Olympic medallist. Despite these achievements, India faced a number of disappointments at Paris 2024. The country missed out on six potential medals, with athletes including Lakshya Sen, Mirabai Chanu and Manu Bhaker finishing fourth in their events, having come close to securing a third medal.
