ASI surveyed Kartik Mahadev temple, which opened after 46 years

The Kartik Mahadev Temple, which opened after 46 years in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh, was surveyed by the Archaeological Department (ASI). On Friday, a four-member ASI team inspected this ancient temple. In the survey, along with the temple, 5 pilgrimage sites and 19 wells of the area were also examined. This survey lasted for about 8-10 hours. A total of 24 locations have been surveyed.

Sambhal District Magistrate (DM) Dr. Rajendra Pansia has said that this temple could be around 1000 years old. ASI will soon submit its report to DM.

Historicity and discovery of the temple

This temple was discovered during an ongoing search operation in Khaggusarai area in Sambhal.

• This temple was closed after the 1978 riots.
• When the team investigated the temple, after opening its doors, statues of Lord Shiva and Hanuman were found installed inside.
• An ancient well was also present outside the temple, which was cleaned after digging.

After the doors of the temple opened, there was an atmosphere of joy in the Hindu community. Rudrabhishek of Lord Shiva was performed and chola was offered to Hanuman ji.

DM’s response and archaeological study

DM Dr. Rajendra Pansia described this temple as historical and said:

“This temple is part of the 52 Sarais, 68 Tirthas, and 19 Kupas of Sambhal mentioned in the scriptures. The ‘Amrit Well’ located nearby may also be a part of it. We have written a letter to the Archeology Department to find out carbon dating and its characteristics.”

Temple found amidst chaos

After the recent controversy during the survey of Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, the administration intensified the search operation.

• Illegal encroachment and electricity theft are being investigated.
• In the same sequence, electricity theft was caught at the house of SP MP Ziaur Rahman Burke and encroachment was also removed.

During the search operation, this ancient temple was visible to the team in Khaggusarai area. After this, the doors of the temple were opened on the instructions of the DM.
