Jodhpur: The Rajasthan High Court has granted seven days parole to Asaram Bapu, who is serving a life sentence in Jodhpur Central Jail, for treatment. The 85-year-old baba will go to Maharashtra for treatment in police custody. The POCSO court of Jodhpur convicted Asaram Bapu for raping a minor in his ashram and sentenced him to life imprisonment. A trial court in Gujarat convicted the baba for repeatedly raping a female follower in his Surat ashram in 2013.
Asaram is in jail since 2013
Asaram has been in jail since September 2, 2023, after which he tried several times to get bail but was unsuccessful. It is being told that Asaram, who was in jail, suddenly had chest pain due to which he was admitted to AIIMS, Jodhpur.
The petition was rejected in March
Earlier in March, the Supreme Court had refused to intervene on Asaram's plea challenging the Rajasthan High Court's decision to dismiss his plea seeking remission of sentence on medical grounds.
But the Supreme Court said that a religious leader can approach the High Court for health treatment. Later, in a petition filed by his lawyer, Asaram said that his health is deteriorating.
Asaram, convicted of raping a teenager, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Jodhpur court in 2018. He was arrested in 2013. 11 years after his arrest, Asaram has got a big relief from the Rajasthan High Court. He has got 7 days parole for treatment. Asaram will be taken to Maharashtra in police custody for treatment. Asaram's interim parole has been approved by the High Court bench of Judge Dr. Pushpendra Singh Bhati. There is no possibility of Asaram coming to Gujarat during this parole.
