Trump called Putin: After winning the presidential election in America, Donald Trump spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin on phone on November 7. According to the Washington Post, several people familiar with the matter have confirmed this. One of them, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Trump had called from his Florida resort. Meanwhile, Trump advised the Russian President not to escalate the war in Ukraine and reminded him of America's large military presence in Europe.
Putin congratulated Trump on his election victory and said he was ready to talk to him. He stressed the need to work toward restoring US-Russia relations and ending the war in Ukraine. The two leaders discussed the goal of peace on the European continent and Trump expressed interest in continuing talks to discuss an early resolution of the war in Ukraine.
Donald Trump had said during the election campaign that he would immediately end the war in Ukraine. However, he did not explain how he intended to do so. According to media reports, people familiar with the matter said Trump has personally indicated that he would support a deal that would retain some territory occupied by Russia. Trump also briefly raised the land issue during his talks with Putin.
Trump spoke to leaders of 70 countries
The call, which was not previously confirmed, comes amid general uncertainty over how Trump will reset the diplomatic chessboard of US allies and adversaries following his decisive victory on Tuesday. Trump told NBC on Thursday that he has spoken to about 70 world leaders since the election, including Ukrainian President Zelensky. He also talked to Elon Musk.
Ukraine also reported on Putin's call
According to the report, two people with knowledge of the matter said that Ukrainian authorities have also been informed about Putin's call. He has not expressed any objection to this conversation. Because Ukrainian officials had long understood that Trump would talk to Putin about a diplomatic solution to the war.
Trump also spoke to Ukrainian President Zelensky on November 8 and assured him of his support for Ukraine. However, he did not clarify his point of view. During the conversation, Zelensky congratulated Trump on his election victory. Notably, tech billionaire Elon Musk also joined Zelensky on the call, telling the Ukrainian president that he would continue to provide Starlink satellite internet connections to Ukraine.
People familiar with the matter said Trump's initial calls with world leaders were not conducted with the cooperation of the State Department and US government interceptors. The Trump transition team has not yet signed an agreement with the General Services Administration, which is standard procedure for the presidency. Trump and his allies have lost trust in government officials after the president's phone calls were leaked during his first term. In such a situation, informed people are calling Trump directly.
Putin called Trump brave
Russia initially reacted coolly to Trump's victory. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin has no plans to invite the incoming president of an unfriendly country that is directly or indirectly involved in a war against our state. However, on Thursday President Putin publicly congratulated Trump on his victory and called him brave for standing firm despite the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
Putin said, “I don’t think it is wrong to talk to Trump.” If some world leaders want to restore contacts, I am not against it. We are willing to talk to Trump with a desire to restore relations. Helping end the Ukrainian crisis, in my opinion, I'm impressed by the way Trump conducted himself after the assassination attempt in July. I'm impressed that Trump is a brave man.
