The country’s newly appointed Chief Justice (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna was seen in full action on Tuesday, the second day of his tenure. He has already ordered to start a new system for immediate hearing of cases in the Supreme Court.
He said that oral mention for urgent listing and hearing of cases will no longer be allowed. He has asked the lawyers to send e-mail or written letter for this. Lawyers usually make an oral request for urgent hearing of their case before a bench headed by the CJI at the beginning of the day’s proceedings. CJI Khanna changed the age-old tradition by saying that now there will be no oral mention. The request for expedited hearing will be accepted only through e-mail or written letter, provided that the lawyer must explain in the letter the reasons for the need for expedited hearing of the case.
CJI outlines citizen-centric agenda
The new CJI Khanna outlined a citizen-centric agenda for judicial reforms and said it is the constitutional duty of the judiciary to ensure easy access to justice and treat citizens equally regardless of their status. On Monday, CJI D.Y. CJI Sanjeev Khanna, who became CJI after Chandrachud, after administering the oath of office to President Draupadi Murmu, said that the judiciary is an integral but separate and independent part of the governance system. The Constitution entrusts us with the responsibility of fulfilling the important function of constitutional protection, protector of fundamental rights and service provider of justice.
