Chandigarh: Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljeet Kaur received information about child marriage that a minor boy was being married by a family in Rupnagar. Taking immediate action on this, the Minister ordered the officials of the department to investigate the matter and take necessary action.
The Cabinet Minister said that regarding the violation of anti-child marriage law, information was received through Childline that a 17-year-old boy from village Aspur Kotan, district Rupnagar, who is a minor, is being married. On the orders of the Cabinet Minister, District Child Protection Unit Rupnagar took immediate action along with the Child Marriage Prevention Officer.
The DCPU and DMPO team stopped the wedding preparations of the panchayat members of Aspur Kot village, the families of the bride and groom and the owner of the palace. Statements of both the parties were recorded on this occasion. The team explained to the boy and girl. The family assured the team that the child would go to school from the next day.
Meanwhile, Dr. Baljeet Kaur has demanded the Chief Minister to ensure the welfare of children. Emphasized the commitment of the Punjab government under the leadership of Bhagwant Singh Mann. He appealed to the citizens to immediately report the incident of child marriage to the district authorities. He also told the parents that child marriage is a curse for the society. He said that childhood is the age of development of the child, hence they should not marry their child.
