The Himanta Biswa government of Assam has recently decided to repeal the Muslim Nikah and Divorce Registration Act. The Assam Cabinet has taken a historic decision to repeal the age-old Assam Muslim Nikah and Divorce Registration Act. The Act contains provisions allowing Nikah. This also includes when the bride and groom have not reached the legal age of 18 and 21 years, as required by law. This step is another important step towards stopping child marriage in Assam.
I will not allow child marriage to happen as long as I am alive.
Himanta Biswa Sarma said on child marriage, as long as I am alive, I will not allow child marriage to happen in Assam. In fact, during his speech in the Assam Assembly, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “…Listen to me carefully, as long as I am alive I will not allow child marriage to take place in Assam. As long as Himanta Biswa Sarma is alive I will not let this happen… I challenge you politically, I will close this shop before 2026.
Assam cabinet canceled this law two days ago
Two days ago, the Assam government repealed the Muslim Nikah and Divorce Registration Act, 1935 to ban child marriage in the state. A decision in this regard was taken in the cabinet meeting held late on Friday night. In a post shared on social media, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote that 'On February 23, the Assam Cabinet took an important decision and withdrew the age-old Assam Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Act. The Act provided that marriages could be registered even if the bride and groom were not of legal age for marriage i.e. 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. This is an important step towards stopping child marriage in Assam. Now marriage in Assam is legal only when one is of suitable age for marriage.
