The strategic strength and border infrastructure of the Indian Army is going to get a historic boost. Work is going on war footing on the ambitious ‘Nimmu-Padam-Darcha’ (NPD) road connecting the strategically important Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh, under which the world’s highest Shinkun-La tunnel is being constructed. To take stock of this strategic project, top Army officials recently conducted a ground visit to the ongoing construction work under ‘Project Yojak’ and closely inspected the security preparations. What is the importance of Nimmu-Padam-Darcha Road and Project Yojana?
Nimmu-Padam-Darcha Road Project is one of the most important and challenging projects being run by the Indian Border Roads Organization (BRO). The total length of this road route is approximately 298 kilometers, which provides a safe and alternative route to the Manali-Leh Highway. Since this route passes through the Ladakh region, it remains safe from enemy prying eyes and attacks as well as provides easy transportation in all seasons. Under ‘Project Yogyak’, wide roads and bridges are being built by cutting the hills in this inaccessible area so that there is no hindrance in the movement of soldiers and weapons in the event of war or even during peace.
Shinkun-La Tunnel: World’s Highest All-Weather Tunnel
The most important and crowning part of this entire project is the construction of ‘Shinkun-La Tunnel’, which is being built at an altitude of about 16,580 feet. This will be the world’s highest tunnel, which will keep Ladakh and Zanskar valley connected to the rest of the country even during heavy snowfall and cold weather. Till now, due to heavy snowfall during the winter season, the routes leading to Leh-Ladakh remained closed for months, due to which the army had to face huge difficulties in logistics and supply of weapons. But after the Shinkun-La tunnel is ready, this problem will end forever and the Army will be able to reach the LAC i.e. the Line of Actual Control in record time in any weather.
Top military leadership visit and strategic review
To take stock of the progress of these ongoing defense works in the border areas, the senior leadership of the Army personally visited the construction sites under ‘Project Yogyak’. During this, officials of the Engineering Wing and BRO gave them detailed information about the technical challenges of tunnel excavation, road construction and the strategic plan to complete the work within the stipulated time. Military officials expressed satisfaction that despite the inhospitable weather and extreme cold, the workers and engineers worked day and night to bring this seemingly impossible project to fruition. This visit is a clear proof of how serious India is about strengthening the infrastructure on its borders.
