New Delhi, 18 October (Hindustan Reporter). Indian Grand Master Arjun Errigassi has defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France to win the 2024 WR Chess Masters Cup, taking home the top prize of Euro 20,000 and 27.84 FIDE Circuit points.
However, despite the win, Erigassy could not cross the 2800 mark as his French rival made two consecutive draws in the classical games. Errigassi knew he had to win in classical chess on the final day to pass 2800 points for the first time in his career.
Vachier-Lagrave had drawn all of her Classical games, but had won three out of three Armageddons, with Arjun saying of her strategy, “Basically, I thought I should just finish it off in the Classical!”
Erigaysi, who is ranked world number four with a live rating of 2796.1, defeated compatriots Vidit Gujarathi and R. Defeated Pragyananda.
