Are you troubled by unbearable pain and cramps during periods? This special herbal drink recommended by nutritionist will provide instant relief

For women, the time of menstruation i.e. periods every month is very sensitive physically and mentally. During this period, complaints of severe cramps and pain in the lower abdomen, waist and thighs due to contractions in the muscles of the uterus are common. In many women, this pain (which is medically called dysmenorrhea) becomes so intense that it becomes difficult for them to even do their normal routine. To get relief from this problem, many women immediately resort to painkiller medicines, but by repeatedly taking painkiller pills, there is a risk of side effects like stomach acidity, ulcer and hormonal imbalance. In such a situation, nutritionists have shared the recipe of a traditional and very effective herbal drink, which is capable of providing instant relief by calming uterine cramps without any side effects.

According to nutritionists and dieticians, nothing can be better than natural spices present in the kitchen to get relief from period pain. Four key Ayurvedic ingredients are required to prepare this special period-relief drink—carom seeds, dry ginger powder, pure desi jaggery and a pinch of turmeric.

The method of making this drink is very simple. Take one and a half glass of water in a vessel. Add half a spoon of celery, a quarter spoon of dry ginger powder, a small piece of jaggery and a pinch of turmeric. Boil this mixture on low flame until the water reduces to about one cup. After this, filter it and when it is lukewarm, sip it and drink it like tea. Experts recommend that if one starts consuming it once a day 1-2 days before the onset of periods, the unbearable cramps occurring on the first and second day of menstruation can be avoided to a great extent.

This drink is not just a home remedy, but all the ingredients present in it are scientifically and clinically proven to relax the uterine muscles:

  • Thymol present in celery: A powerful antispasmodic element called ‘thymol’ is found in celery. It helps in relaxing the contracted muscles of the uterus and intestines, thereby immediately reducing the problem of abdominal cramps and gas.

  • Anti-inflammatory properties of dry ginger: Ginger and dry ginger contain compounds called ‘gingerol’ and ‘shogaol’. It reduces the level of prostaglandins chemicals in the body, which are the main causes of swelling and pain during periods. In many studies, the effect of dry ginger has been found to be equivalent to drugs like ibuprofen.

  • Warmth and Iron of Desi Jaggery: Jaggery contains natural sweetness as well as abundant amounts of iron and magnesium. It facilitates blood flow in the pelvic area and removes weakness and fatigue during periods.

  • Turmeric Curcumin: Turmeric’s active ingredient ‘curcumin’ is an excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, which reduces internal inflammation caused by hormonal fluctuations.

Nutritionists say that along with just drinking drinks, it is also mandatory to take some basic dietary precautions during periods:

  • Keep Adequate Hydration: Drinking less water increases bloating and cramps in the stomach. Drink lukewarm water, coconut water or chamomile tea throughout the day.

  • Stay away from caffeine and sugar: Avoid coffee, cold drinks, and overly sweet foods, as caffeine constricts blood vessels, which can worsen uterine pain.

  • Use of hot water bag: Apply a heating pad or hot water bag to the lower abdomen along with herbal drink. Heat reduces muscle tension and activates endorphins (feel-good hormones).

  • Light Yoga and Stretching: Avoid heavy workouts in case of pain, but light yoga asanas like ‘Balasan’ (Child’s Pose) or ‘Baddha Konasana’ give miraculous results in soothing the strain of pelvic muscles.

If a woman faces conditions like unbearable pain, excessive bleeding or fainting every month even after home remedies and lifestyle changes, then it should not be ignored as normal. This may be a sign of internal problems like endometriosis, PCOD or fibroids, for which a gynecologist should be immediately examined.
