Are you observing Karva Chauth fast for the first time? Know what to give as a gift to your mother-in-law

In Sanatan Dharma, the holy fast of Karva Chauth is considered to have special significance. For married women, this fast is no less than a big festival, but the women who observe Karva Chauth fast for the first time in their life, along with excitement, there are many situations of confusion in their minds. On the first Karva Chauth, special care is taken about everything from the rules of fasting to the puja material and the tradition of taking out ‘Bayana’. The tradition of giving Bayana on the day of Karva Chauth is centuries old, in which the newly married bride receives blessings of her mother-in-law or any elderly woman in the family by presenting wedding items and gifts. If you are also going to observe your first Karva Chauth fast this year, then it is very important for you to know which sacred things are considered mandatory to be kept in the kitchen plate and what things are given as gifts to the mother-in-law so that the full results of the fast can be achieved.

Bayane has a special place during the worship and story of Karva Chauth. ‘Bayana’ is actually the plate or material of Shagun which the fasting woman donates or gifts to her mother-in-law, sister-in-law or any respectable married woman of the family. It is believed that the blessings received from the food, fruits and wedding items kept in the bayna provide the blessing of unbroken good fortune. The importance of Bayane also increases on the first day of Karva Chauth because on this day the daughter-in-law for the first time shares her good wishes for her new life and long life of the married woman with her mother-in-law. Mainly Karva (earthen or metal pot), Puri or Matthi, Halwa or sweets, fruits, and sixteen adornment items are kept in the bayne. After taking out the bayana, the mother-in-law places her hand on her daughter-in-law’s head and blesses her to remain married forever, which increases the intensity and affection in the relationship.

If you are observing Karva Chauth fast for the first time, then you should decorate the left plate with great rituals and devotion. The main material of Bayane is first made of clay or copper, which is filled with water and some rice or coins. After this, buttermilk, pale or sweet sugar, puris and semolina pudding or feni are kept in the plate as food items. Bayana is considered incomplete without wedding accessories, hence keep red vermillion, glass or lac green-red bangles, Mahavar, Alta, Bindi, Kajal, Mehndi, comb and mirror in it. Apart from this, some rupees (cash money) and any small gold or silver item (like a ring or a toe) can also be gifted as per one’s capacity in the form of Dakshina. As fruits, apple, banana or other fresh fruits are included in the food according to the season.

On the day of Karva Chauth, in the evening before the moon rises, after the women have heard the story, the ritual of Bayane is performed. Sathiya or Tika is applied with Roli on the left plate and all the things of Suhaag are decorated in it. While taking out the bayna, one touches the feet of one’s mother-in-law or the elder lady of the house by moving one’s hands on the plate. At many places, the blessings of the mother-in-law are taken by sprinkling water from the karwa kept in the bayna and she is presented with the material for the wedding ceremony. If for some reason your mother-in-law does not live with you, then you can respectfully give this bayana to another married woman of the same age as your mother-in-law, your sister-in-law or even a worthy Brahmin by going to the temple. Only after paying the bayana to the mother-in-law, the fast is broken by offering Arghya to the moon.

First Karva Chauth is one of the most beautiful moments of every woman’s life, so it is important to take care of small things on this day. On the day of fasting, after eating Sargi in the morning, keep positive thoughts in your mind throughout the day and prepare for the worship of Mata Karva by doing sixteen adornments. The material of Bayane should always be clean and of good quality as it is given as a mark of respect and honor to the elders. Pray to God for your husband’s long life, good health and bright future.
