News India Live, Digital Desk: Festivals not only mean celebrating happiness but also keeping oneself in discipline. The festival of Makar Sankranti is especially a day of discipline and restraint. This year, on this holy festival to be celebrated on 14 January 2026, we should take some special precautions in our daily routine.

1. Satvik food is the basis
On the day of Makar Sankranti, one should avoid consuming tamasic food i.e. meat, fish, garlic and onion. This day is of purity, hence simple and easily digestible food (especially sesame and khichdi) is considered best. Also, one should completely stay away from drugs and alcohol.

2. Don’t turn anyone away empty handed.
This day is dedicated to charity. It is believed that on the day of Sankranti, if a beggar or a needy comes to your door, then he should donate something as per his devotion. Rebuking anyone and sending him away empty handed can reduce your accumulated virtues.

3. Avoid bitter words
It is written in the Puranas that there should be sweetness in speech on festival days. Getting angry or abusing someone is not considered auspicious. Hurting someone with your words can destroy the fruits of this holy day.

4. Do not consume food before bathing
On the day of Makar Sankranti, there is great importance of taking bath in the holy river or by pouring Ganga water at home. According to religious beliefs, consuming food without taking bath on this day is considered faulty. First purify yourself and worship, only then eat something.

5. Do not harm trees and plants
Makar Sankranti is a festival of worship of nature. Cutting trees or damaging any plant is prohibited on this day. If possible, you can do good work for your future generations by planting a tree on this day.
