Are 'best before' and 'expiry date' the same? FSSAI explains the difference

When we buy any packaged food item, the first thing we do is look at its label. Also, the first thing we look at is the 'best before' and 'expiry date' of the food. Only after this do we pay attention to its nutritional value. Checking the label of any food is very important for our health.

Are 'best before' and 'expiry date' the same?

In such a situation, many people consider the best before date and expiry date to be the same. For this reason, many people throw away the food after its best date has passed. But this is not right. Actually these two are not the same but different. Yes, recently the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has also shared information about this. So know the difference between best before date and expiry date.

What does the date of manufacture indicate?

The production date is written on any packaged food. This date tells when it was made and packed. This tells how many days ago the food was made.

What's first?

The best before date written on any food packet tells how long the taste and aroma of that food will remain intact. But if the best date of a food item has passed, it is not necessary that it will harm health. It may also be that it is edible and does not cause any harm to health. That is why it is called best before date. It means for how many days or months after the date of manufacture, the aroma and taste of the food will remain intact.

What is the expiry date?

Now let's talk about the expiry date. This means that food after this date will not be edible and can cause harm to health if eaten. Expiration of any packaged food means that the chemicals and ingredients used in that food are no longer safe to eat. Therefore, eating food after the expiry date can be dangerous for health and it is better to throw it away. If the food has expired, do not feed it to any animal. This can also harm their health.

From this you can understand that the best before date tells about the taste and texture of the food, but does not tell whether it is safe to eat or not. But the expiry date indicates that the food is not safe to eat and can harm health.
