Armless Indian archer Sheetal Devi missed the world record by one point in the individual compound event of the women's archery event at the Paris Paralympics. Sheetal Devi set the world record with 703 points.
But within minutes, her opponent Oznur Kuray of Turkey won the final point and set the world record with 704 points. Shital and Oznur had earlier broken the world records of 694 points set by Jessica Stratton and 698 points set by Phoebe Peterson in the Para Games.
Both Shital and Oznur were on top from the start of the ranking round and by the end of the second half, the Indian archers were ahead. They overtook Brazil's Carla Gogel and Turkey's Oznur to take the top spot. Shital shot nine in her final attempt to give her a total of 703 points but Oznur took the record with a perfect-10 shot in her final attempt. Fatema Hemati with 696 points and Jodi Greenham with 693 points were third and fourth respectively.
India's Aruna Tanwar lost in Taekwondo
India's medal hopes in Taekwon-Do were dashed. Aruna Tanwar lost 0-19 to Turkey's Nursihan Ekinci in Round 16 of the women's K-44-47 category. Aruna could not stand against the Turkish player. She could not score a single point in the five-minute round. Ekinci scored two points each with body kicks nine times. Ekinci was also given a penalty point after Aruna fouled. Athletes who have one arm longer than the elbow are placed in the K-44 category. Para Taekwondo was included in the 2021 Tokyo Games for the first time.
