Approval to change the name of 8 stations of Mumbai: Ahmednagar now Ahilya Nagar

Mumbai: The state government held its second cabinet meeting in 48 hours before the code of conduct for Lok Sabha elections came into force. In the meeting, mainly the proposal to change the names of eight stations of Mumbai was approved. Apart from this, it was decided to name Ahmed Nagar city-district as Ahalyanagar. It was decided to change the name in honor of Punyashlok Ahalya Devi Holkar.

After passing 18 proposals in the cabinet meeting held on Monday, 26 more decisions were taken in today's cabinet.

Last year, Aurangabad was renamed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad was renamed Dharashiv. Now in today's cabinet the name of Ahmed Nagar has been changed to Ahilya Nagar.

A proposal to change the names of eight Mumbai stations from their British past was also approved.

As per the proposal, Curry Road station will be named as Lalbagh, Sandhurst Road station as Dongri, Marine Lines station as Mumbadevi, Charni Road station as Girgaum, Cotton Green station as Kalachowki, Dockyard Road station as Mazgaon and Kings Circle station as The name will be kept as Tirthankar Parshvanath.

After legal approval, the proposal to change the names of these stations will be sent to the Union Home Ministry and Railway Ministry.

The state government had earlier sent a proposal to the Central Government to change the name of Mumbai Central Railway Station to Nana Jagannath Shankar Seth Station. Let us tell you here that in the year 2017, the Central Government had changed the name of the city's Elphinstone Road suburban station to Prabhadevi. The station was named after Lord Elphinstone, Governor of the Bombay Presidency from 1853 to 1860.

A few months ago, the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in south Mumbai was renamed 'Maharaj'. With this its name has become Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. It was once known as Victoria Terminus, after Queen Victoria of Great Britain.
