Mumbai: The court has rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Abhijeet Patil, the owner of an Ayurveda company in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, on charges of creating a deepfake video of actor Amitabh Bachchan and posting it on social media. Earlier, the court had also refused to grant him interim protection from arrest.
After seeing several deepfake videos on social media, Bachchan filed a case with the cyber police in May. Bachchan Patil was seen promoting the company's products in the video. The actor is also accused of creating and posting pornographic deepfake videos to promote sexual health products. Fearing arrest, he applied for anticipatory bail in the sessions court and sought relief till the decision on the application. He said that the allegations leveled against him are baseless, false and fabricated.
In response, the police said that even in cases of making pornographic videos by stealing the identity of celebrities and actors, the cyber crime accused are confident that they will get bail. If the accused are given relief, the investigation will be hampered. The accused has deceived the public and the fans of the actor.
The court adjourned the hearing on the anticipatory bail plea. The statements of Patil's employees were also recorded. Patil was sent a notice to appear before the cyber police on July 4, but despite coming to the city, he did not appear.
