New Delhi : Lakhwinder Kaur, wife of Badal Singh, one of the three Sikhs killed at the Pul Bangash Gurdwara during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, testified against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler. Lakhwinder Kaur, Rouse Avenue-based counterpart of special judge Rakesh Syal, said an eyewitness told her that Tytler had come to the spot in a vehicle and instigated the mob.
Lakhwinder Kaur told the court that in 2008 she met Surinder Singh Granthi, who worked as a granthi at the gurudwara, who told her about the incident. Surinder Singh had seen the incident from the roof of the Gurudwara. She said Granthi told her that she saw her husband Badal Singh being taken out of the gurudwara and then attacked by the mob. She said that according to Granthi, she had seen that the person who had taken out her husband's saber had killed her by inserting the saber into her body. Lakhwinder Kaur said that Granthi also told that Tytler had come to the spot with a car and had gathered everyone. Lakhwinder Kaur said that Surinder Singh told her that the mob resorted to violence at the instigation of the owner and after killing her husband, put the body in a vehicle, covered it with burning tires and burnt the body. Lakhwinder Kaur said that she had filed a petition to investigate the matter. Tytler's lawyer objected to this statement and said that Granthi's statement was hearsay and not admissible as evidence. The court rejected this claim and adjourned the case till October 15. On May 20, 2023, the CBI filed a charge sheet against Tytler in the case. The CBI alleged in its charge sheet that Tytler had instigated and instigated the crowd gathered at Pul Bangash Gurudwara Azad Market on 1 November 1984. As a result, the Gurdwara was burnt and three Sikhs, Thakur Singh of Badal Singh, Gurcharan Singh were killed.
