Santo Domingo: Women are fighting against a criminal code that completely bans abortion. Some men have also joined them.

On Wednesday, women from across the country began protesting in the Dominican Republic's capital, named after St. Dominic, against a sweeping anti-abortion law. Some men joined them as well.

According to the anti-abortion law passed by the country's Senate, a woman who performs an abortion will be sentenced to two years in prison. Also, midwives and doctors who provide assistance will be given a sentence of 5 to 20 years. Four other Latin American countries also have such laws.

This bill will reduce the punishment for men who indulge in adultery after marriage. But there will be no change in the laws regarding abortion. Even after so many riots, the government list says.

Sergei Galvan, a feminist activist and leader of the anti-abortion campaign, said that we will continue our fight to repeal the law. If the woman's life is in danger, abortion will be allowed.

Sergia Galvan's point is acceptable, but allowing abortion even when the woman's life is not in danger is a violation of humanity. No one can have the right to kill a child who has not yet seen the outside world. The ideologues who advocate abortion say that genocide is manslaughter, forgetting that 'motherhood is the fulfillment of womanhood.'
