Anniversary special: The everlasting pairing of Punjabi duo Chamkila and Amarjot

Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjot are remembered as a duet duo who performed more together than any other artiste during their time. Even though it has been 66 years since Amarjot and Chamkile left this world, their popularity is still the same. In this era of social media, lovers still listen to Chamkila-Amarjot duo with great interest. With time the luster has not faded but has deepened.

Amar Singh Chamkila (house name Dhani Ram) was born in Dugri village of Ludhiana district and Amarjot (house name Babbi) was born in Faridkot. In the initial period, people knew Chamkile as a lyricist because many big artists of that time became famous by singing songs written by Chamkile. When Chamkile became famous in songwriting, he thought that he would record songs in his own voice. Anyway, he used to accompany the artistes and thus he got good practice in singing songs. He also had complete expertise in playing waja and tubi. While his first written song 'Main Dhali Tilak Ke' was sung by Surinder Chhinde with Sonia, his first recorded song 'Takuy Te Takua Khaad Ke' was also released with Sonia. Although some of the songs written by him in the initial phase were poor, but with time his pen also became popular.

After singing a few songs in the initial phase, laziness overcame him and he did not give up till the end. Chamkil openly presented the evils of the society in his couplets, due to which he was criticized the most compared to other artists of that era. In the same period, Chamkile wrote 'Talwar Main Kalgidhar Di Hai', 'Sarhand Di Deeware', 'Naam Japp Le', 'Baba Tera Nankana', 'Tareyan Di Loy Loy', 'Paani Diya Bulbulya', 'Toor Chali Jindariya'. . '.He also silenced his opponents by singing songs. Chamkile presented every color of singing. Even today he is considered the pinnacle of Punjabi duet singing. In those days, Chamkile's lion-like voice in the Punjabi atmosphere and Amarjot's tinkling voice in religious and duet singing echoed in the speakers all around. Bright paan was played at weddings and also in Guru's house. While no one was buying the records of many artists of that time, Chamkile's records were also in Black Witch. Chamkila was not only a lyricist and singer but he also had a lot of humility. He traveled by bicycle but he remained Dhani Ram of Dugri villagers.

Once upon a time, Chamkila became number one among the famous artists of Punjab by making a set with Babbi (Amarjot) of Faridkot. By him writing couplets in typical Punjabi Malwai accent and composing his own compositions, the art of fitting the akhna/idioms into the song, expertise in playing tubi and waza, a distinct style of playing akhada with soul, beautiful and melodious singer Amarjot. Also made him famous. Chamkile entertained people in the Akharas by singing songs that created humor in relationships, improved social relations in rural public life, told the reality of hypocritical saints, were romantic and guided the society. In fact, when he used to sing in the Akharas, people used to demand Chamkila to sing a song which was considered to be an obscene song. Chamkila also used to say about this in many Akharas that friend, 'I know you do not like religious songs, but the singer also has good songs, you must listen to good songs.' The company people also told Chamkile to record only Tatte songs. Chamkila wanted him to record songs like 'Jagga Chak Chaudhary', 'Dhi Maar Je Badkar Loko', 'Dhiyan Bhainaan Looten Ve Tu Kahda Soorma', 'Sach Ki Kat Puniya' in the company, but it could not happen.

The end came on 8 March 1988, when Amarjot and Chamkila were murdered along with their two companions in village Mahasampur, district Jalandhar. After Chamkile's death, it was a big shock for those people whose employment was going on only because of him. When he died, he was preparing to record several new singles, duets and religious songs. The songs written by him, which he often sang with Amarjot in Akharas, were later recorded by many artists of Punjab after his death. Those artists also copied the style of Amarjot and Chamkile but no one could achieve as much success as them. Today the 36th death anniversary of Amarjot and Amar Singh Chamkile is being celebrated in village Dugri, district Ludhiana.
