Who can forget Bollywood actress Amrita Rao, who ruled millions of hearts with the innocence and simplicity of ‘Poonam’ in Rajshri Productions’ blockbuster film ‘Vivah’. Even today, when traditional and family films are mentioned, the name ‘Vivah’ comes at the top. However, very few people know that Amrita Rao got this historic role not because of any big audition or a big hit film, but because of a small character of just 7 minutes. The actress herself has revealed this interesting story of change in her fate in a media interview.
Amrita had come to meet Sooraj Barjatya wearing jeans and T-shirt. Amrita Rao, while sharing the memories of her first meeting with Rajshri’s veteran director Sooraj Barjatya, said that when she got the call to meet, she had no idea what kind of character Sooraj ji was looking for in her. Like a typical modern Mumbai girl, Amrita reached his office wearing jeans and T-shirt. When she went there and came to know that Sooraj Barjatya was considering her for the lead role of ‘Poonam’, a very simple and traditional girl from the city of ‘Madhupur’, she herself was surprised.
The 7-minute role of ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’ created history. During the conversation, when Sooraj Barjatya told Amrita that he had seen one of her films and liked her work in it, Amrita thought that he was talking about one of her commercial hit films. However, when Sooraj Barjatya revealed the name of the film as ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’, Amrita’s eyes became moist. Amrita said that her screen time in that patriotic film was barely 7 minutes. Her innocence even in such a small role left such a deep impression on a veteran director like Sooraj Barjatya that he decided without any delay to make Amrita the main face of his biggest film ‘Vivah’.
The film, made with a budget of Rs 8 crore, had created history at the box office. According to Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) and film industry records, the film ‘Vivah’, released in 2006, is counted among the most profitable family films in the history of Indian cinema:
