The political temperature in the country’s capital New Delhi increased rapidly when Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday hit back strongly by rejecting all the questions raised by Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on the Election Commission and electoral processes. Amit Shah bluntly said that instead of accepting the bitter truth of his party’s continuous electoral defeats, Rahul Gandhi is looking for an excuse to put the constitutional institutions and the Election Commission in the dock. While presenting a series of election data and recent results, the Home Minister has given strict political advice to the Congress leadership to introspect and humbly accept the people’s mandate.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah rubbished Rahul Gandhi’s allegations citing recent election results. Shah said that whenever the popularity of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is proved among the public, the opposition parties, to hide their failure, try unsuccessfully to dismiss it by making false pretexts like electronic voting machines or special amendment procedures (SIR). Raising questions, the Home Minister said that in a big state where Congress once had absolute rule, the party has not been able to win a single election for the last 41 years. Shah said that Rahul Gandhi should seriously consider his party’s policy, intentions and leadership before raising questions on impartiality, because ever since he took charge of the Congress, the party has been heading towards electoral decline.
Amit Shah exposed the ground situation of Congress by giving details of the results of by-elections held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Union Territory Puducherry recently. He said that the Congress party completely failed to win even a single seat in the by-elections of these three states. In Naugaon, the BJP candidate registered a historic victory by snatching the seat from Congress by a huge margin of 1,42,000 votes. In Nandigram seat of West Bengal, the BJP candidate secured 76 percent votes and took a huge lead of 1,22,000 votes. Even in Rejinagar seat, BJP defeated Trinamool Congress by a margin of more than 75,000 votes. In Puducherry, NDA alliance ally AINRC won by 8,482 votes, while the main opposition party Congress could get only 22 percent votes.
Referring to the election results at the local government level, the Home Minister said that the election results of two municipalities of Gujarat and Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation have once again made the mood of the people clear. Out of total 104 seats, BJP won 90 seats unilaterally, in which BJP won 38 out of 44 seats of Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation under its parliamentary constituency and the party’s vote share increased to 10 percent. He told that Aam Aadmi Party had fielded its candidates on 32 seats, but its deposits were confiscated on all the seats. Apart from this, in the local body elections of Rajasthan, BJP historically captured 90 percent municipal corporations, 66 percent municipal councils and 65 percent municipalities, where Aam Aadmi Party could not even save its deposit in more than 85 percent wards.
Rejecting the opposition’s allegations on EVMs and the election system, the Home Minister clarified that many local and panchayat elections were conducted entirely through ballot paper. Giving the example of Tripura’s village committee elections, he said that NDA won about 4,000 seats out of total 4,600 seats and got 77.5 percent vote share, while the Congress party was limited to just 14 seats. Shah said that these ballot paper results have completely demolished all those baseless arguments which blame the election defeat on machines. He reminded that Congress has been out of power in Tripura for the last 33 years and in West Bengal for 54 years. The Home Minister concluded by saying that when the public has been continuously rejecting a party for decades, the only way left is to honestly introspect on one’s mistakes instead of defaming the constitutional institutions.
