Amit Malviya’s departure and Deepak Mhaske’s entry: The inside story behind BJP’s new social media team

In a major reshuffle in its organizational structure, the Bharatiya Janata Party has relieved Amit Malviya, who was the digital face of the party for the last 11 years, from the post of IT cell chief. In his place, Deepak Mhaske of Chhattisgarh has been appointed as the new social media head. The exit of Amit Malviya, who played a key role in the party’s historic victory in West Bengal, has become a topic of discussion in political circles.

The ‘mathematics’ of age and equations

According to party sources, the decision to remove Amit Malviya from the post was not taken suddenly. Malviya himself had expressed his desire to relieve himself from the leadership after the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The biggest hurdle was ‘over-representation’. After Harish Dwivedi (Brahmin Kota), who came from Uttar Pradesh, was made the General Secretary, it was not practical to accommodate Amit Malviya, who came from the same state and the same community, at the same level. Moreover, as per party norms, he is not yet considered senior enough in age to hold senior posts like National Vice President or Secretary.

West Bengal’s victory and Malviya’s contribution

Even though the opposition continued to attack him as IT cell chief, Malviya’s stature within the party has been quite high. Serving as co-in-charge of Bengal for the last six years, the role he played in ousting Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress from power has been highly appreciated by the party leadership. There was a tremendous increase in BJP’s social media followers during his tenure. The journey that started with 2-3 lakh followers on ‘X’ (Twitter) in 2013 has reached 2.3 crore today.

The challenge of ‘Gen Z’ in front of the new team

The biggest challenge now facing Deepak Mhaske is to take forward the digital narrative that Malviya had established. The focus of the new team will no longer be limited to traditional social media only, but will be on connecting ‘Gen Z’ youth with the party. The priority of the new team will be to further expand the digital popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and respond to the attacks of the opposition with the same aggression.

What will be the future of Amit Malviya?

At present the party has clarified that this is only part of the organizational change. However, what will be the next step of Amit Malviya is still a matter of suspense. Considering his contribution to the organization, it is believed that the party will definitely include him in some other big responsibility.
