Mumbai: Sensex, Nifty based stocks ended marginally soft again today after a volatile session. Volatility eased a bit towards the end of the day as funds cautiously reduced overbought positions despite better than expected opening of TCS corporate results due to good progress of monsoon and heavy rain concerns. However, funds again made broad purchases in small, midcap stocks today. Along with this, selective buying remained in oil-gas, consumer durables, metal-mining, capital goods, banking stocks. Funds booked profits in automobile stocks as international crude oil prices rose on reports of OPEC continuing to cut production. Sensex tumbled between 80,170 and 79,464 to close 27.43 points down at 79,897.34. While Nifty 50 spot tumbled between 24403 and 24193 and finally closed 8.50 points down at 24315.95.
Oil India up by Rs 39 to Rs 551: HPCL up by Rs 15 to Rs 350: ONGC, Petronet rise
International crude oil prices rose to $85.45 for Brent crude and $82.40 for New York crude due to expectations of production cut by OPEC countries and maintaining demand, while oil-gas stocks remained attractive for funds. Oil India rose Rs 38.70 to Rs 551.45, HPCL rose Rs 14.60 to Rs 350, Petronet LNG rose Rs 9.20 to Rs 341.70, ONGC rose Rs 6.75 to Rs 304, BPCL rose Rs 6.25 to Rs 306.60, Indian Oil Corporation rose Rs 2.55 to Rs 174.50. The BSE oil-gas index closed 512.55 points higher at 30972.90.
