In order to tighten the noose on countries that continuously buy crude oil and natural gas from Russia, the US Parliament has passed a very strict sanctions bill through procedural voting. During this time, American Senator Roger Wicker has openly said without any hesitation that the main target of this new and strict law is countries like India and China, which are continuously buying energy resources from Moscow and financially supporting its military power and Russia-Ukraine war. According to the provisions of this proposed bill, if it becomes a law completely, a huge import duty of up to 100 percent can be imposed in America on the products of countries doing business with Russia or purchasing energy, which is expected to have the most direct and profound impact on the Indian economy and global trade.
Strong majority support and political background in the Senate
The closure motion on this important ‘Lindsey O’Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act 2026’, brought in memory of the late US Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, has been passed in the US Senate with an overwhelming majority by a margin of 86-12. Interestingly, the voting took place on the same day that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Washington to meet US President Donald Trump and also attended the funeral of late Senator Graham. Amidst this entire political incident, this aggressive stance of American senators is clearly indicating that Washington is now fully mentally prepared to impose stringent sanctions on countries doing energy trade with Moscow.
“The target is not friendly countries but China and India”
During a special press briefing, when US Senator Roger Wicker was asked a question about the international implications of this bill, he gave a blunt statement and said that the draft of this law has been very carefully designed so that it does not have any negative impact on America’s traditional allies, but its entire attack falls directly on China and India. Making a sharp attack on the policies of India and China, Senator Wicker said in clear words that these countries are the main culprits in this entire matter because they are buying huge quantities of Russian oil and gas, which is continuously fueling the Russian war machine and they are not working in favor of American interests on the global stage.
India’s strategic stance and the threat looming on the global energy market
The Government of India has already taken a very clear and strong stand on this matter, in which New Delhi has repeatedly reiterated that purchasing crude oil from Russia at concessional rates is essential in the country’s national interests and to keep fuel prices under control in the domestic market. Strategic experts believe that if the US signs this 100 percent tariff provision into law, it will not only create huge tensions in bilateral trade relations but will also further destabilize the already stressed global energy market.
