The US has once again warned Pakistan against cooperating with Iran. The Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline is an important project to meet Pakistan's energy needs which has been stalled for a long time due to US disasters. America's new warning will increase Pakistan's worries.
Our sanctions against Iran will continue
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller has commented on the gas pipeline in a press conference. Addressing the press conference, he said, 'We will continue our sanctions against Iran. Apart from this, those doing business with Iran should be aware of the potential impact of those agreements.
An agreement was signed in 2010
The US has been pressuring Iran through sanctions for a long time. Due to which the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project has been severely affected. Iran-Pakistan signed a project agreement in 2010. Under which it was decided that Iran would supply 750 million to 1 billion feet of natural gas to Pakistan per day. The deadline for laying the pipeline was 2014 and the gas supply deal was for 25 years.
The pipeline has not been laid yet
The pipeline was to be 1,900 km long. Out of which 1,150 km was to be laid in Iran and 781 km in Pakistan. This pipeline was to extend from Iran's South Pars gas field to Gwadar in Pakistan. Even after more than a decade, Pakistan could not start the work of laying the pipeline. Whereas Iran has almost completed the work of the pipeline.
The length of the pipeline will be only 80 kilometers
Pakistan says that it could not complete the project on time due to US sanctions on Iran. Earlier this year, Pakistan had said that it would keep the length of the pipeline to just 80 km. According to local media reports in Pakistan, the project will be completed in the next 24 months at a cost of 44 billion Pakistani rupees.
America's warning and assurance to Pakistan
The US State Department spokesperson has also assured Pakistan of energy security while warning it against cooperating with Iran. He said, “We are talking to the Pakistan government on the issue of energy security.” “While Pakistan is setting new deadlines to complete the gas pipeline project with Iran, this new warning from America is sure to increase its difficulties.”
